The 2017 Mazda CX-5: A Fun-to-Drive Compact SUV

If the compact SUV segment is so popular at the moment, it's because many consumers are looking for a spacious vehicle with a higher driving position that does not require too many compromises, in regards to how the vehicle behaves on the road and its fuel economy.

With its SKYACTIV technology that retains performance while reducing fuel consumption, its new G-Vectoring Control system, its large cargo space, and its impressive ride comfort, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 meets all the criteria for SUV buyers, which explains its popularity.

G-Vectoring Control: a new technology that stands out

Let's talk about Mazda’s new G-Vectoring Control technology, probably the most unique and revolutionary system found on the new 2017 Mazda CX-5. Simple enough in theory, the G-Vectoring Control system uses engine torque to stabilize the vehicle both when driving in the city and on the highway.

The end result is that when we drive at low speeds in the city, passengers feel less back and forth movements. On the highway, steering requires fewer corrections to keep the CX-5 pointed in the right direction.

Under the hood, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is powered out of the gate with a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV four-cylinder engine with 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. This engine can be paired with a manual transmission. The majority of buyers will, however, opt for the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 187 horsepower (3 more than the older generation) and 185 lb.-ft. of torque.

In addition to being powerful, this engine is also fuel efficient with an average fuel consumption rating of just 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway when paired with i-ACTIV all-wheel drive. It will be even more fuel-efficient when delivered with front-wheel drive.

2017 Mazda CX-5: a spacious and well-equipped SUV

With its 875 liters of cargo space with all seats in place, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 has no difficulty accommodating everything needed for a family vacation, a ski trip or a ride to the supermarket. Lower the rear seats, and you get 1,687 liters of cargo space.

Available starting at $24,900, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 comes standard with 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, rear-view camera, keyless entry and LED headlights. A set of 19-inch wheels, heated rear seats, BOSE audio system, leather seats, blind spot monitoring system, power liftgate, and heated steering wheel are available on either of the other two versions of the 2017 Mazda CX-5.
